Transforming from tourist to solidarity traveler: the invisible journey
Abstract
The concept of the “solidarity traveler” represents an evolution in the profile of the contemporary tourist by integrating tourism with social commitment and responsibility toward the communities visited. Beyond generating economic impact through tourist spending, this new traveler seeks to leave a meaningful imprint, which we call the “Love Footprint at Destination”, as a symbol of their contribution to the well-being and sustainable development of the destination. In this context, we propose a new theorization that frames the “solidarity traveler” as an agent of change and promoter of international solidarity, not only through direct actions but also by creating lasting human and cultural connections.
To illustrate this proposal, we present the paradigmatic case of The Way of the Holy Grail itinerary, a project currently being submitted to the Council of Europe for Certification in the 2024-2025 cycle. This itinerary, in addition to being a cultural and spiritual route, serves as a model of solidarity tourism that fosters interaction between travelers and local communities, promotes respect for heritage, and seeks to leave an emotional and ethical legacy at every stage of the journey.
This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting responsible and sustainable tourism that transcends the mere personal experience to generate a positive and transformative impact on host communities. Thus, the “solidarity traveler” becomes a bridge between cultures and a key actor in building a more just and inclusive world.
