Cocoa as cultural heritage in Tabasco; and its impact on the region's economy
Abstract
This paper analyzes the historical importance of cacao in the state of Tabasco, as it is a natural and intangible cultural heritage, declared as such by the state congress in 2024. The objective of this study is to understand its impact and economic well-being on the population in the Chontalpa region and what public policies should be implemented to boost the community's economy. The methodology used in this research was descriptive and qualitative, prioritizing observational, documentary, and historical techniques. The main finding observed is that there is a lack of public policies to take advantage of the fact that cocoa has a "designation of origin," this to incentivize the production, marketing and consumption of this natural product and have a direct impact on the economy by making cocoa from the Chontalpa region known as cultural heritage, and achieving the designation called "geographical indication."
It is proposed that there be immediate attention from the public sector to producers and detonate the economy and cultural tourism of the region.
