Dark tourism at the end of the world. The case of the old cemetery in Puerto Natales, Southern Chilean Patagonia
Abstract
Puerto Natales is a small town located in Southern Chilean Patagonia and is considered the gateway to the internationally renowned “Torres del Paine National Park”, one of Chile's greatest adventure tourism attractions. The aim is to highlight the importance of the so-called Old Cemetery of Puerto Natales, "Cementerio Padre Alberto Hurtado," which is part of an Urban Historical Circuit.
Through dark tourism, the aim is to tell the story of this cemetery, which summarizes and reflects the evolution of this town, from its origins to the present day, through the most important events and people of its brief but rich history, its industrial origins, its conflicts and struggles, and its present-day presence in this remote and inhospitable area.
It also highlights the need for greater integration of the cemetery into the Urban Historical Circuit, creating an attractive and coherent narrative for potential visitors and tourists from around the world who may visit its facilities.
