The mangroves of Centla as a tourist heritage: an ecological and economic treasure for Tabasco
Abstract
This research aims to analyze the potential of mangroves in order to understand their economic impact and viability for the Tabasco economy, potentially leading to the creation of a tourist route at the national level. The Centla mangroves constitute one of Mexico's most valuable and complex ecosystems, where natural wealth combines with the possibility of generating sustainable economic development. The ecological potential of mangroves serves as a foundation for boosting the regional economy. The findings demonstrate that mangroves are not only sources of biodiversity but also potential drivers of local development through sustainable fishing, ecotourism, and environmental education. However, challenges persist, such as agricultural expansion, pollution, and a lack of coordinated public policies.
The research employed a qualitative methodology, specifically descriptive, exploratory, and explanatory, as it characterizes a phenomenon within a specific context. The results show that mangrove ecosystems serve as nurseries for many species of fish and crustaceans, making them essential for local fish populations. Sustainable fishing practices that adhere to environmentally sound methods can be developed and implemented, thus ensuring that fish populations remain stable in the long term. Therefore, it is concluded that more social policies from the government are required to consolidate the municipality as a national leader in sustainable tourism.
