Analysis of the cultural tourism offer in Puerto Rico: challenges and opportunities for sustainable development
Abstract
Puerto Rico boasts a diverse cultural tourism offering that combines tangible and intangible heritage with significant potential to contribute to sustainable development. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the cultural tourism resources available on the island, encompassing prominent historical sites such as Old San Juan (designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983), musical traditions, local festivals, and native gastronomy. The analysis considers the island's main tourist regions, highlighting the cultural particularities of each area and their contribution to positioning Puerto Rico as a leading cultural tourism destination in the Caribbean. Furthermore, the study examines challenges related to sustainability, heritage conservation, and the integration of local communities into tourism activities. The findings indicate that effective management of cultural resources can generate significant economic and social benefits, provided that heritage preservation is prioritized, and responsible tourism practices are promoted. Additionally, the study identifies opportunities to diversify the cultural tourism offering and strengthen its role as a driver of local development. This communication aims to provide a foundation for discussing effective strategies in the management of cultural tourism in Puerto Rico, aligned with sustainability principles and the reinforcement of the island's cultural identity.
